Science Fiction Reviews

Hi, I’m Commander
Geri Rochelle

Veraxis ID Number 85273, Consortium Agent

When I’m not caring for my baby daughter, Alis, or running a super-secret spy mission for the Consortium forces, I’m reading science fiction!

Each month (that I'm not on a mission), I’ll release a new pick with review, a book I’ve personally enjoyed.

Title: Hunters For Hire
Author: Jonathan Yanez
Series: Hunters For Hire

Hi Again!

I’m on a roll with great reads! Jonathan Yanez an his Hunters For Hire series is a must, if you loved Jim  Butcher’s Dresden Files, you will for sure love these! Once you get to know his characters, you won’t want to let them go, so I sure hope Yanez keeps this going. Of course there is lots of supernatural battles, and a great deal of suspense. I’m also, as you know, a serious fan of humor and snark, which this had plenty. He did a good job of letting us get to know and care for his characters in the first book. Now I want to keep them all! Give this a read and you too will be hooked…

Happy Reading,

–Geri

Title: Captain Wu – Starship Nameless
Author: Patrice Fitzgerald & Jack Lyster
Series: Starship Nameless

Patrice Fitzgerald and Jack Lyster, with their Starship Nameless series, nailed it for me. The main character is a bad-ass grandma! I can relate to her, for sure 😉

This story has perfectly crafted dialogue that pulls you in to each character. And “characters” they all are. Her snark and tongue-in-cheek is a lot of fun. Don’t worry, there is plenty of pew-pew. Creepy aliens round out the cast of characters.

The first book had such good flow, I can’t wait to get to book two. It’s so much fun watching “grandma” kicking ass and taking names. Don’t miss this read, it’s got it all!

Title: Earth Warden (Earth Warden Saga book 1)
Author: Tyler Aston
Series: Earth Warden Saga

Tyler Aston’s launch into sci-fi is a huge success in my mind! No lack of humor & wit. He reminds me of someone, else I’ve read, in fact. After contacting some sources for information, it seems this author’s name may just be a moniker, although I’ll not give anything away. Spies don’t out other spies…

Anyway, the book is a saga of a 300 year old battle hardened warden abducting a teen boy from earth, to become his apprentice. There is a lot of intrigue, plenty of crazy (really crazy) battles, and even some unlikely romance (not too much.)

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’ll just say it has everything great space opera should. Please don’t miss this one, it keeps you in suspense while pulling at your heartstrings and tickling your funny bone.

Title: Shattered Gods (book 1)
Author: Chris Fox
Series: Shattered Gods

Geri here again, got something truly special for you this time.

I’ve got a 5-star read for you! Shattered Gods, by Chris Fox, is spectacular. Yeah, yeah, I know. You’re saying “but Geri, it’s Fantasy, not Sci-Fi…” But the author has really outdone himself with this book.

The story has detailed and intriguing characters, fantastical settings, and amazing creatures, both good and evil. This first book in the series weaves so many of my favorite elements throughout. I’m tasting flavors of Harry Potter, Legend, Star Wars, The Hobbit, literally any of the epics. Because this is EPIC.

The tale lets you live the suspense, cliffhangers, tragedies, humor, mind-blowing plot reveals… yeah! You won’t be disappointed if you start book one. And don’t worry, I’m already hounding the author to hurry up and publish book #2 (I have my contacts, you know.)

Title: Archangel Project
Author: C. Gockel
Series: Archangel Project

Whew, that was a long mission!

I’ve finally got another good one for you readers. No, wait, a great one! C. Gockel’s series Archangel Project is “woke” sci-fi! By that I mean she skillfully uses her story to illustrate so many of the prejudices and injustices of our world today. She has done so using awesome aliens, humor, lots of action and plenty of cliffhangers.

Her characters are all very intriguing and well crafted. I really appreciate that I couldn’t predict the plot ahead of time! There are a whopping nine books in the series and I couldn’t stop until I read them all. The story has such a good flow you just can’t put it down. DO NOT miss this one.

Title: Fractured Empire
Author: A.K. DuBoff
Series: The Cadicle

Dear Fellow Reader,

I finally had a REAL vacation! Spent it at the beaches of Caladon Four, of course. My favorite spot. Naturally, I brought a book. “A” book turned into seven! A.K. DuBoff’s Fractured Empire series was a fantastic read.

It spans four generations of epic galactic human struggle, with lots of intrigue and cliffhangers. Halfway through book one, I was already totally invested in the characters. I loved being carried on this journey of discovery, battles, and triumphs. The battles were described in cinematic excellence, and the human interaction was fascinating.

For seven books, it was a quick read, because I couldn’t put it down for long. A.K. DuBoff is rightfully called the Queen of Space Opera.

Happy Reading!

Title: Veil Rising
Author: Brandon Ellis
Series: The Starguild Saga

Well, my downtime waiting for my next mission was well spent, indeed! I got to read Brandon Ellis’ Starguild Saga… Touched my heart on sooo many levels. His flow of story is seamless, and the action cinematic. Pew-pew-pew. Characters are packed with essence, whether good or evil. The story is so full of twists and turns, you dare not take if for granted. I recommend this one as a must read! Oh, and please don’t pass on the Author’s Notes, they are priceless, and truth.

Happy Reading!

Title: The Messenger
Author: J.N. Chaney
Series: The Messenger

Hello again, fellow readers.

I’m really hooked on J.N. Chaney’s and Terry Maggert’s The Messenger series right now! I hate having to put it down to report in to command. This is an epic space story. The settings are fantastic and the characters are irresistible, especially the AI’s… I’m a sucker for a snarky AI.

This story is so immersive you feel like you are flying, you are fighting, you are suffering with the characters. Once you start this series, it’ll be a wild ride you won’t want to stop. So go for it, it’s some of their best.

Title: The Vacuum of Space
Author: Julia Huni
Series: Space Janitor, Book #1

Commander Geri Rochelle here. I’m back with another review. Sorry it’s been awhile, but I’ve been away on a mission of strategic importance to the Consortium. But I’m back now, and have had some time to catch up on my sci-fi reading.

If you want a fun read, do pick up the first in the series Space Janitor, Book 1. While it’s not pure Space Opera (and doesn’t have the typical pew-pew), it’s more of a Space Mystery, it’s got lots of tongue-in-cheek snark. The characters are engaging and varied, and the mysteries have plenty of surprises and, dare I say it… giggles. Even the romance didn’t get annoying!

December 2019 (#2)

TITLE: Fury to the Stars
AUTHOR: Christian Kallias
SERIES: Universe in Flames, Book #2

The pace and character depth are maintained from the first book, but boy do the characters get a power-up! I’d recommend the box-set, it’s seriously a lot of content!

December 2019 (#1)

TITLE: Earth, Last Sanctuary
AUTHOR: Christian Kallias
SERIES: Universe in Flames, Book #1

The first book is entertaining, the characters are compelling. The setting is great, mixing galactic adventure with modern-day Earth. Sometimes some of the plot twists were predictable, but it was overall an entertaining read.

November 2019

TITLE: Renegade Star
AUTHOR: J.N. Chaney
SERIES: Renegade Star, Book #1

Great characters, exciting plot, cool universe. I mean, Jace isn’t quite as talented as I am, but he’s pretty resilient. He’s got a foul mouth, so…
